One often reflects on possible remedies for the seemingly escalating incidence of “thoughtless driving”. Speed limits and controlling signs are ignored and unnecessary risks taken at roundabouts etc. There often seems to be a compelling desire to be “in the lead”.
Of course, it can be a challenge to be held behind a slow paced lorry, especially when one cannot see the scene ahead. It seems that even with the proliferation of roadside signage and road surface markings there does not seem to be a proportionate amount of modified driving, almost the reverse is happening.
Do you have some suggestions/ ideas/ initiatives that could help?
A recall a local radio station running a creative promotional project to encourage more thoughtful driving. They produced an eye-catching window sticker sharing the idea. If you felt the driver in front was doing well, you could contact the radio station and points would be allocated to the driver. The winner each month would receive £100. Maybe more such projects should be launched.
An organization I discovered recently is RoadPeace This is an excellent initiative that is seeking to address the challenge of careless driving from many angles. Will keep you posted about the ongoing developments. I’ve also discussed with local police about ways to address this issue.
The national outlay of finances for road surface signage alone must be vast. Could the funding be used in a more impacting way and effective way ?
