What a wonderful surprise to meet up with an ingenious mother and her youngsters in our local park. It is an intriguing area that has been reclaimed and redesigned. Formerly the local railway track, it has been transformed to become a discovery experience. It extends up into the small valleys among the low hills surrounding the town. There is a variety of woodland, a small lake and river. Intriguing trails have been designed throughout the park. There is a variety of wildlife too for the enjoyment of intrepid explorers.
One youngster looked really comfortable in the modern two-tier pushchair. The older child was exploring the area. I noticed the mother had a folder open across the basket section of the pushchair. Being curious, I enquired about the mystery activity. I discovered that they were on a “nature discovery” trip. Mum had thoughtfully downloaded and printed sheets of photos. Each of these contained a brief descriptions of the main animals, trees and plants that they might encounter in the area. As a plant, tree or animal was excitedly spotted , then a sticker was placed on the photo in the album.
This was a tremendous joy to see. A family learning together. A mum taking time and thought to choose, download and present in a fun way – the various materials as part of the exploration. The latest byte-technology was being used to the full. I’m sure those youngsters will remember such events with increasing pleasure and appreciation in the years ahead.
The teacher in me had been activated and wonderfully refreshed by such an inspiring experience. The combination of excitement, discovery and alert observation by the youngster resulted in such a rich experience. Maybe you have encountered or observed similar creative family activities. If so, then why not share them with us to enrich others.
