“How can I help you?” is a wonderful question – one I have found so helpful in many situations. On various overseas assignments many people have assisted our projects as sponsors. These folk have been so generous and supportive.
While talking with them and often in the process of thanking them at the end of a project, I’ve fielded the question: “How can we help you?” Of course, such generous sponsors are not looking for any special thank you. The success of the project is more than enough for them and often they receive excellent publicity coverage during the city-wide events.
It is interesting though, how very special ways have come to light in which I’ve been enabled to assist them. Having many contacts in a whole variety of fields, has been one route of showing gratitude. Resources and contacts for which they have been searching are suddenly made available and they are very grateful.
One example was being able to share about education in the UK. It was so valuable for the official with whom I was meeting as he was sending his son to the UK for his university studies. On another occasion, a business man was looking for a school in the UK where his son could gain some valuable assistance for his dyslexia. Being able to recommend a contact was much appreciated. A senior official once asked if I might be able to assist in four areas in which he was searching for resources. The most interesting perhaps was his search for someone in the agro-tourism field. An agricultural consultant friend assisted him in that area.
Trust you too will have many such partnership opportunities – and by the way – there are more examples of how you – or anyone – can help under the Making a Difference section. You might like to check them out.
