Kiva - Loans that Change lives
Kiva's mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.
Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.
Pendo Luisi, 27 years old, borrowed 5 to open a cafe in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Kiva was born of the following beliefs:
•People are by nature generous, and will help others if given the opportunity to do so in a transparent, accountable way.
•The poor are highly motivated and can be very successful when given an opportunity.
•By connecting people we can create relationships beyond financial transactions, and build a global community expressing support and encouragement of one another.
Kiva promotes:
•Dignity: Kiva encourages partnership relationships as opposed to benefactor relationships. Partnership relationships are characterized by mutual dignity and respect.
•Accountability: Loans encourage more accountability than donations where repayment is not expected.
•Transparency: The Kiva website is an open platform where communication can flow freely around the world.
As of November 2009, Kiva has facilitated over 0 million in loans.
Unitus ~ Innovative Solutions to Global Poverty
Unitus, an international nonprofit organization, fights global poverty by accelerating the growth of microfinance—small loans and other financial tools for self-empowerment—where it is needed most.
More than 2.5 billion people survive on less than a day. In places such as Sub-Saharan Africa, the total living below this line approaches 75 percent. For millions of families in need, microfinance offers the hope for a successful small business and more: increased economic stability, better healthcare and housing, the opportunity for education, and ultimately, the real possibility of self-sufficiency.
Unitus is not your traditional nonprofit. In addition to on-the-ground microfinance expertise, we bring executive experience from banking, technology, and corporate consulting backgrounds to employ market-driven solutions to age-old problems of financial exclusion and poverty. Our model focuses on seeking out and partnering with young, high-potential microfinance institutions (small banking organizations that serve the poor, often called MFIs), helping them build capacity, attract capital, and unite with our network to achieve rapid, sustainable growth.
Microfinance is most effective when a microcredit loan is supported by a range of client-supporting products and services such as business skills training, savings programs, and basic insurance plans. In support of these innovations, Unitus encourages the development of "high-impact" microfinance: a combination of increased access to these tools with an emphasis on sustainability, client protection, and social impact.
We target our efforts in high-need regions of the developing world where microfinance has promise but is struggling to grow. Once MFIs and/or regions reach critical milestones and demonstrate sustainability, we shift our resources to where they can be used most effectively.
The devastating downward cycle of extreme poverty is not inevitable. Microfinance can help reverse a family's fortunes in a single generation. The greatest challenge is extending microfinance fast enough—and far enough—to make it available to the hundreds of millions still waiting.
Unitus works with 23 microfinance partners in India, Southeast Asia, East Africa, South America, and Mexico. These MFIs are growing 7 times faster than their peers, demonstrating the strength of their leadership and the promise of our approach. In less than a decade, we've helped our partners serve more than 10 million families.
OptINow ~ End Global Poverty - Faster
Our mission is simple. We're working to end global poverty. Faster. How? By providing those who live in chronic poverty with one vital thing they need to transform their lives: Opportunity.
But that's not all. Along the way we hope to transform additional lives, like yours. That's why we've made it so simple for good people everywhere to come together, to fund small loans, to witness big and lasting impact, and to truly change the world. And with your help we'll get there.
We are not for profit. We are part of Opportunity International; one of the largest and most well respected microfinance organizations. Since 1971 we have been providing loans, business training and other financial services to entrepreneurs in some of the poorest parts of the world. We are heeding Jesus Christ's call to serve the poor. And we're doing it in a whole new way. We're doing it with giving that keeps going. We hope you'll join us.
Crossroads ~ Where Need meets Resources
Crossroads Foundation is a Hong Kong based, non-profit organisation serving global need. We believe that, in a broken world that sees too much suffering, we should do all we can to link those who are in need with those who can provide help. So we provide an intersection, literally a crossroads, to bring both together.
It's a quiet, cool night, and a small group of men has set out from their refugee camp to gather firewood. Suddenly, almost from nowhere, five rebel soldiers, guns and ammunition strapped to their uniforms, burst out at them and begin shouting in a strange, forceful dialect...
Global Survivor is an annual event where Hong Kong corporate leaders choose to undergo a 24 hour simulation experience in which they are placed, in simulated form, under the kind of oppression that many people in poverty and conflict zones live every day. It is a sobering experience for participants, who are given a new perspective on the dilemmas, tragedies, heartbreaking choices and hopelessness of chronic poverty. Other features of Crossroads are: Global Distribution, Global Hand, Global Hanicrafts and Global Village.
