Sight on Wings

A brilliant initiative in the field of sight enhancement is called ORBIS. This group has developed a superb training programme based on a DC8 aircraft. After months of detailed planning, the aircraft arrives in a host country. A team of visiting international eye surgeons perform numerous operations on eager folk's eyes, while leading surgeons, from the host country, watch the operations onboard the aircraft through closed-circuit TV.
High quality video/DVD's of the operations are made available to the Governments of the host countries . What a remarkable investment in the further growth and development in this field of expertise. It is wonderful to see the partnership with a leading international freight company in this venture. They assist with transport requirements such as freighting spare parts for the aircraft or even handling one of the engines when it is needing to be serviced overseas.
Such creative projects are very encouraging to observe. Only a complex web of relationships and partnerships can bring to fruition such a major operation, which in its own right can bring enhanced quality of life to so many thousands of individuals and their families. The integrated factors of sustainability through the in-house teaching and close mentoring of the host countries' medical specialists make such an initiative highly effective.
Its mobility gives it an added dimension, enabling recipients in many lands to be assisted through its services rather than being geographically anchored to one location.
