One-stop shop
A one-stop shop has been setup in Yeovil to provide young people and others with ideas how to help give their community a push in the right direction. The Somerset Youth Volunteering Network took over the vacant premises in the Quedam Shoping Centre several weeks ago and have had encouraging enquiries.
They have now held an official launch party with special guests including the Mayor of Yeovil Councillor Phil Chandler. Anybody aged 12 - 25 can pop in for a chat about volunteering, whether they are looking for an existing local project, fancy jetting off somewhere exotic, or have a new idea of their own.
Chief Executive Officer, Scott McMillan said: " The idea is to take a space and give young people and community groups access to the rest of the community." "Anybody who wants to get into volunteering can come in and we are also working with groups so they can use the shop to promote themselves however they would like to."
The shop will regularly host a visiting group of the week, with the Girl Guides already running a successful campaign and future interest from local youth theatre companies. Mr McMillan said: "It is great when people come to us with an idea for their town or village but don't know where to go next and we can help them."
"We want To support that kind of thing. It's a kind of job centre for volunteering."
