Maximising bus routes
On a recent bus journey in a SW UK city, I noticed an excellent use of road control mechanisms to give priority to buses and thus increase the efficiency of their routings. Watching the driver of our bus confidently enter a "no through road", my curiosity was stirred to guess how he was going to negotiate turning the vehcile in such a restricted area.
Ahead of us were two formable bollards, silently guarding the road and thus preventing traffic moving out into a busy thoroughfare. The bus driver reduced speed. As he did so, the bollards began gracefully sinking below the surface and the bus exited with ease. Once through the barrier, the bollards came back into their blocking position again.
Being my first experience of such ingenuity, I was pleasantly encouraged to see such creative and intelligent thought being invested in the road systems and circulation patterns controlling the traffic flow in that city.
Well done, may we see more such wisdom invested in our communities in many areas of life.
