Julia Davey ~ Ceramic Artist
Julia Davey lives in Bath and works from a small, local studio making small batches of bespoke tableware and framed fine art ceramics. Themes running through her work vary from the natural to typography: based on her travels and found objects. She is a trained educator and belies in sharing skills, knowledge and practice.
While exploring a local crafts exhibition, my first sight of Julia's work just sparkled with creativity and then watching her serve a customer with finnesse was such joy to see. Her work has the hallmark of character and uniqueness. [editor]

Hungdrawnquoted - artist and illustrator Kate Talbot.
Kate studied Graphic Design at Batley Art College and Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University before turning her attention to illustration. She graduated with a Masters from Central St Martins in 2002 and has been actively exhibiting and working to commission.
Kate's art practice combines painting, mixed media, textiles and embroidery to create 'ironic iconic' imagery. This is alternative craft. It is no soft option, but is thought provoking, witty and enjoyable.
Artist Statement
I did my time as an art student, daubing paint on canvas, pressing pencil to paper, sticking anything to everything and grappling with the notion of form and function. I spent countless hours staring into space, waiting for the muse to be upon me and.....I'm still waiting!
In the meantime, I find myself turning textiles into icons of modern day culture and wondering why I feel so comfortable. Could this my calling? Maybe I'm not the only one out there who needs to turn felt and thread into a can of beans purely because it's Wednesday and the voices told me to!
I find it difficult to describe my work as it is a fusion of many styles and influences that seems to take on a life of their own in the making. As an artist I have no desire to alienate the viewer but to engage with them and find a common thread! For me that is the double take, the giggle as the penny drops or just the need to reach out and touch.

Horton Village ~ A small, friendly village.
Horton is a small, friendly village on the slopes of the Blackdown Hills, situated 5 miles north of Chard and 2.5 miles west of Ilminster, in the county of Somerset, south-west England. It currently has a population of some 850 people.
In 1782 the Ilminster Turnpike Trust constructed Jordan's Bridge to carry the main road over a stream in Horton Cross, where the centre of the village was. In 1880, Horton House (again Horton Cross) was built as the manor house. It has been designated as a Grade II listed building.
During the late 1970's, a small group of children from Channells Lane got together to form a club called "The Sword of Justice". They decided to try to raise money for charity and arranged a village fete to benefit Dr. Barnardos. The fete proved very popular and was repeated the following year. This time the funds were dedicated to make improvements to the playing field in the village.
The Horton Flower Show first became an annual event in 1965 in a very small field next to the Victory Hall. In later years the playing fields at Channells Lane became the location for the event, but when parking became a problem the site moved to the field opposite St Peter's Church and the church room became an ideal place for cream teas!

MCA ~ A Postive Force for the Economy
The role of the MCA
The Management Consultancies Association (MCA) is the representative body for management consultancy firms in the UK. Our 55 member companies comprise around 70% of the UK consulting industry, estimated to be worth £8bn in 2009, employ more than 40,000 consultants and work with over 90 of the top FTSE 100 companies and almost all parts of the public sector.
In order to achieve its mission, the MCA is implementing its three year strategy that was developed following extensive consultation with member firms. It focuses on delivering value to members through three key objectives:
• Being the voice of the industry
• Promoting a credible and professional industry
• Creating better engagement with and between members.
The MCA informs and influences public debate on topical issues, and provides authoritative data on the industry. It commissions research and policy analysis and represents the industry in discussions with government and other stakeholders. The MCA also facilitates networking and the sharing of best practice within the industry through events, publications and initiatives such as the Young MCA.
The MCA's tough entry criteria and rigorous Code of Practice mean that MCA member companies are widely acknowledged to provide high quality services to their clients. Many of their achievements are recognised in the annual MCA Awards.
Management consultancy creates value for organisations and the wider economy through improved performance, achieved by providing objective advice and implementing business solutions. The UK consulting industry is amongst the best in the world and a vital part of the business landscape.

Disasters Emergency Comittee ~ A unique Alliance
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) was formed in 1963. We are an umbrella organisation for 13 humanitarian aid agencies.
At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need.
The DEC's remit is to unite agency efforts in times of disaster - such as flood, earthquake or famine - wherever it happens in the world. The way we at DEC approach our work is to maximise funds raised and ensure they are spent in an effective and fully accountable way.
DEC Members
The DEC is made up of 13 aid agencies, who are UK registered humanitarian charities that fulfil certain criteria. The DEC members have the expertise in the delivery and provision of aid. Members' performance and any new applicants are reviewed every two years.
Rapid Response Network
The DEC is also supported by a network of television and radio broadcasters, the banks, the Post Office, BT, regional and national press and a range of organisations in the corporate sector. These organisations help the DEC at the time of an appeal, to publicise the situation and raise funds.
National Appeals
Crises and emergencies occur regularly throughout the world and the DEC cannot respond to them all. DEC appeals are reserved for major disasters and emergencies which cannot be dealt with by the usual in-country coping mechanisms, and where DEC agencies are in a position to respond quickly and effectively. Our DEC Decision-making guidelines are used to ensure that a national joint appeal is the appropriate response to a particular emergency.
At the time of appeal, we coordinate a strategic response with our members and Rapid Response Network partners, organising a national fundraising appeal to finance urgently needed humanitarian relief.
Our Mission Statement
The DEC is always striving to raise the standards of humanitarian aid. We work to ensure that the funds raised by the public are spent in the most effective way to finance humanitarian relief. Our DEC Mission Statement outlines this.
Our Achievements
We simply could not carry on working to help people affected by major disasters without the support of the public. Thanks to the generosity of donors we have raised amazing amounts of money which has helped save lives and rebuild communities devastated by disasters.

Truestone ~ Financial Advice to Professionals
Truestone was originally established in 1986 to provide financial advice to professionals, senior executives and business owners working in and around the City of London. These people were successful and wanted a financial adviser who was as knowledgeable and dedicated as they were in their chosen field. They demanded the level of personal service and attention to detail that they, themselves, had to deliver to their clients. Above all they sought a partner they could trust to be open, honest and objective in the guidance they gave.
Truestone evolved in this highly demanding market so that today you will find that we provide a truly thorough and highly personalised financial management service. Since those early days Truestone has developed in other ways; applying its ethos of personal service, expertise and attention to the smallest detail to become successful across a wider range of disciplines.
Employee benefits consultancy
Financial planning
Investment management
Private and commercial lending
Socially motivated investing
Whether you come to Truestone as a private client or as a corporate client seeking employee benefits advice you will find no mass produced financial solutions, no opaque financial jargon, no presumption that we know what is best for you. What you will find is an expert who will take the time to listen to you; explore your personal concerns and aspirations. And then help you crystallize your personal or business ambitions into attainable financial goals. Only then can the advice process begin.

Print Pod ~ Simple, quick and fun.
Halstock Village Shop, Halstock, Dorset, July 2007
Yvonne Stephenson is campaigning to ensure this week's Saint Juthware Arts Festival (12-15 July) is recorded for posterity by villagers. She says "Our grandchildren must see what village life is like today, just as we see what it was like when our grandparents were children. The very best way to do this is also the oldest way: print pictures and keep them in an album or shoebox"
John Prior has joined the campaign. He tells us: "These days, everybody uses digital to take pictures, but people forget that a print is a key way people of all generations share pictures. I love going through old photograph albums, but, if we don't make prints, this pleasure will be a thing of the past." All his customers can now do this simply, quickly and inexpensively, as his Halstock Village Shop now has an instant digital printing kiosk. Residents can now make beautiful prints from their camera phones and digital cameras in seconds, for pennies at his store, whenever he is open.

Medic-Assist International ~ Health Care for needy people.
What We do
In many countries, individuals and whole people groups are subject to discrimination, oppression, and violence by opposing ethnic groups or public authorities. Many people are murdered, leaving behind neglected and vulnerable families. Many more are seriously injured, both physically and psychologically. Elsewhere, the oppression may be more subtle through years of discrimination and neglect. In many other places, unjust cycles of poverty leave many people without any form of healthcare.
There are many individuals and organisations doing amazing work to bring hope in such circumstances. But, in a world of compassion fatigue and media selectivity, many of these stories fail to surface or catch the public imagination. MAI's aim is to empower some of them, especially where a small investment in primary healthcare capacity can bring such enormous benefits.

Mercy Ships ~ Hope on the Horizon
Imagine a ship crewed by doctors, nurses, water engineers and agriculturalists visiting some of the world's poorest countries. Now imagine their life-changing services offered free of charge…
Right now dedicated volunteers from around the world are bringing hope and healing to thousands of people who could never have believed it possible. Welcome to Mercy Ships, a compassionate response to a world where many have lost hope.
IN 1978, a team led by Don and Deyon Stephens began the process of finding a suitable vessel to fulfil their dream of a hospital ship that would reach out to the world's poorest people.
On July 7th 1978, this dream became a reality. The first Mercy Ship, a retired ocean liner called Victoria, was purchased for £600,000. Don and Deyon began recruiting crew for the ship and raising funds to bring the Mercy Ship into compliance with international standards.
Ongoing efforts over four years resulted in the transformation of the passenger vessel into a hospital ship. With the addition of 3 operating theatres and a 40 bed ward, the vessel became an 11,701 tonne floating hospital, carrying a volunteer crew of 350 from all over the world. In 1982, the vessel sailed as the newly christened Anastasis –- the first Mercy Ship.
Since then, various ships in the Mercy Ships fleet have served in more than 150 ports in developing nations around the world, bringing lasting change to hundred of thousands of lives. From the beginning, Don Stephens has served as Founder and CEO of Mercy Ships. Deyon, a registered nurse, serves as the Director of Training and oversees the Ships Watchmen programme. Married in 1966, Don and Deyon have four grown children and became grandparents in 2002.
Dr. Stephens has received the Two Hungers Award and the Religious Heritage Award. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow through Rotary. Conversant in German and French, Don lectures internationally and is the author of two books, Trial by Trial and Mandate for Mercy. His third book, Ships of Mercy is published by Hodder and Stoughton in the UK.
Don is the voice behind the Mercy Minute, a daily radio broadcast aired internationally on over 720 radio stations. Don and Deyon often speak at seminars and conferences worldwide and appear as radio and television guests.
MISSION
Mercy Ships, a global charity, has operated a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. Following the example of Jesus, Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to the poor, mobilising people and resources worldwide.
VISION

Mosaic House ~ it's the people and hospitality is the key.
It's hard to categorise Mosaic House because it is no way an average hotel or hostel. If a hotel means no interaction between guests, closed doors, stuffy staff, mini bars with sky high prices and services that no one really needs – then Mosaic House is definitely not a hotel. If a hostel means cold showers, dirty bathrooms, and malfunctioning facilities then Mosaic House is most certainly not a hostel. Mosaic House was built to satisfy 4-star quality hotel standards with rooms that are equipped with amenities galore. It isn't however the number of stars that create the atmosphere here - it's the people and hospitality is the key.
Part hostel and part hotel but more like home than anything else - Mosaic House is new and different. We're a special blend of style, character, eco friendly features, fun, cultures and ages. There's something here for everyone - from the busy business traveller to the backpack-toting world traveller. We're part hotel, part hostel, part bar and part restaurant. We're also 100% fun.
Attracting guests from all walks of life, the Mosaic House atmosphere provides a stage for guests to interact and share new experiences. You will have access to everything you're looking for at this great location with a relaxed environment. Furthermore you won't have to pay for any unnecessary extras. We hope you'll make Mosaic House your home away from home.

Computers for Charities ~ We can help you: You can help us
Welcome
Computers for Charities ranks as the oldest and most diverse IT reuse charity in the UK. Operating since 1994 CfC has handled in excess of 250,000 computer systems, benefitting projects and organisations across the UK and 105 countries worldwide.
CfC as developers not only refurbishes donated equipment to the highest level, but also conceives and operates home grown programmes to aid the disadvantaged, as with African schools on Line an integrated educational program providing computer access and curriculum development to over 100,000 children plus adult learning.
IT Support to UK Charities and Voluntary organisations, is how it all began and remains a core part of our work.
However it is impossible to remain immune to the greater needs when encountering poverty, civil unrest or political oppression in the many regions that the charity has supported and worked over the years, providing the impetus for our many newer developments including humanitarian aid support.
The bulk of our support is provided without charge, with projects generally not funded or grant aided, and made possible only by the generous support of donors and volunteers.
Daily we receive 500 requests seeking wide ranging support worldwide, but sadly it is only the few that can be assisted.
We need your help. Please Help us to Help them, more donors are urgently needed to aid the supply of suitable computer equipment, financial support, used mobile phones and volunteers.
Please call Tel: +44 (0) 1323 840641 or email: info@computersforcharities.org
If you represent a company or organisation interested in donating equipment to provide charitable benefit, please visit our new website at http://corporate.computersforcharities.org which provides all information about our end to end IT disposal service which provides a safe and practical process whilst encompassing all legislative and environmental requirements.

Re~Cycle UK ~ providing cheap, sustainable transport in Africa
Re~Cycle is a UK charity committed to providing cheap, sustainable transport in Africa. We believe that bicycles offer poor people the best means to improve their lives, giving them opportunities to travel to work and school. They can also be adapted to carry goods and passengers giving small scale farmers and traders the opportunity to reach customers further afield. They are also an invaluable resource for traveling health workers coping with the AIDS epidemic.
We collect unwanted bikes from individuals and organisations such as the Royal Mail. These are reconditioned, loaded into containers and sent to several locations in Africa. There, they are distributed by our African partners. We also teach repair and maintenance skills. The South African Transport Minister, Dullah Omar, saw the massive potential in Re~Cycle and Afribike's work and presented the manifold benefits to parliament. He has requested one million bikes over the next ten years.
Major African Beneficiaries
•Children, who currently walk up to 9 miles each way to school
•Outreach workers, e.g. medical personnel, agricultural advisors
•Women, whose day often has multiple journeys, e.g. fetching water, work, creche
•Commuters and farm workers, taking goods to market
UK Benefits
Re~Cycle has many benefits in the UK, including;
•Training in bike mechanics
•Reducing waste and landfill
•Youth Offending Teams (YOT), probation, the prison service and the army help with preparing and loading
•Brain injury rehabilitation volunteers, finding the workshop a safe and supportive environment

Meech's Menswear ~ a reputation for excellence
Meechs has achieved a reputation for excellence in this crowded field. Holding true the traditional values of customer care and fair pricing but we are still very much part of the 21st Century with our Internet shopping service mixing well with that of personal shopping.
The company has two shop premises in both Weymouth and Yeovil (Dorset) and a well established internet shopping service with website and dispatching office's also in Weymouth. The Weymouth store was opened in 1928 by John Henry Meech and his wife Ruth and is now ran by David Meech his oldest son Kevin Meech along with a loyal team of staff, some of which have been with us since the mid 80's. The Yeovil store was opened in 1971 and is managed by Michael Purchase nephew of David Meech. Meechs.co.uk was founded in 2000 by the youngest son Andrew Meech.
Since it was founded in 1928 the business has continued to prosper and remained in the family through three generations maintaining a prominent trading position in the local market place. Meechs are held in high esteem by customers and suppliers alike. There is a nice feel of informality in our shops with assistants on hand if required, but by no means a nuisance, if you merely wish to browse
