Mercy Ships ~ Hope on the Horizon

Imagine a ship crewed by doctors, nurses, water engineers and agriculturalists visiting some of the world's poorest countries. Now imagine their life-changing services offered free of charge…

Right now dedicated volunteers from around the world are bringing hope and healing to thousands of people who could never have believed it possible. Welcome to Mercy Ships, a compassionate response to a world where many have lost hope.

IN 1978, a team led by Don and Deyon Stephens began the process of finding a suitable vessel to fulfil their dream of a hospital ship that would reach out to the world's poorest people.

On July 7th 1978, this dream became a reality. The first Mercy Ship, a retired ocean liner called Victoria, was purchased for £600,000. Don and Deyon began recruiting crew for the ship and raising funds to bring the Mercy Ship into compliance with international standards.

Ongoing efforts over four years resulted in the transformation of the passenger vessel into a hospital ship. With the addition of 3 operating theatres and a 40 bed ward, the vessel became an 11,701 tonne floating hospital, carrying a volunteer crew of 350 from all over the world. In 1982, the vessel sailed as the newly christened Anastasis –- the first Mercy Ship.

Since then, various ships in the Mercy Ships fleet have served in more than 150 ports in developing nations around the world, bringing lasting change to hundred of thousands of lives. From the beginning, Don Stephens has served as Founder and CEO of Mercy Ships. Deyon, a registered nurse, serves as the Director of Training and oversees the Ships Watchmen programme. Married in 1966, Don and Deyon have four grown children and became grandparents in 2002.

Dr. Stephens has received the Two Hungers Award and the Religious Heritage Award. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow through Rotary. Conversant in German and French, Don lectures internationally and is the author of two books, Trial by Trial and Mandate for Mercy. His third book, Ships of Mercy is published by Hodder and Stoughton in the UK.

Don is the voice behind the Mercy Minute, a daily radio broadcast aired internationally on over 720 radio stations. Don and Deyon often speak at seminars and conferences worldwide and appear as radio and television guests.

MISSION
Mercy Ships, a global charity, has operated a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. Following the example of Jesus, Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to the poor, mobilising people and resources worldwide.

VISION
Mercy Ships seeks to become the face of love in action, bringing hope and healing to the poor.

Mosaic House ~ it's the people and hospitality is the key.

It's hard to categorise Mosaic House because it is no way an average hotel or hostel. If a hotel means no interaction between guests, closed doors, stuffy staff, mini bars with sky high prices and services that no one really needs – then Mosaic House is definitely not a hotel. If a hostel means cold showers, dirty bathrooms, and malfunctioning facilities then Mosaic House is most certainly not a hostel. Mosaic House was built to satisfy 4-star quality hotel standards with rooms that are equipped with amenities galore. It isn't however the number of stars that create the atmosphere here - it's the people and hospitality is the key.

Part hostel and part hotel but more like home than anything else - Mosaic House is new and different. We're a special blend of style, character, eco friendly features, fun, cultures and ages. There's something here for everyone - from the busy business traveller to the backpack-toting world traveller. We're part hotel, part hostel, part bar and part restaurant. We're also 100% fun.

Attracting guests from all walks of life, the Mosaic House atmosphere provides a stage for guests to interact and share new experiences. You will have access to everything you're looking for at this great location with a relaxed environment. Furthermore you won't have to pay for any unnecessary extras. We hope you'll make Mosaic House your home away from home.

RICH DEVOS AND JAY VAN ANDEL
In 1959, Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel founded Amway Corporation. Says Rich DeVos, "We were just two guys from Ada, Michigan, USA who wanted to have a business of our own. We were two kids (it still feels like that sometimes) who were hungry for success and who wanted to give others the chance to be in business for themselves, too." Our late founder, Jay Van Andel, said of the company, "Amway gets people into a new life of excitement, promise, profit, and hope." Amway now operates in over 80 countries and territories around the world.

Andrews online ~ seeking to be the agent of first choice

The Spirit of Andrews
Our aim is to be the agent of first choice within our market, by gaining and maintaining a reputation for delivering the highest possible standards of service, integrity and performance.

The 'Spirit of Andrews' is a unique approach to business. It's not about selling houses or letting property - the nuts and bolts of what we do - it's about the way we go about our business.

It's what makes us different from our competitors and what makes our customers return to us again and again. It's also the foundation that encourages Andrews employees to make the most of their potential and the enormous opportunities that come from working for one of the UK's leading independent property specialists.

At the heart of this 'spirit' are three core values: Service, integrity and performance.

Service
At Andrews we want our staff to be passionate about the property business, but perhaps more importantly we want them to be passionate about delivering superior customer service. It's a difference you'll notice from the moment you step into one of our branches to the moment you complete your sale or let and beyond.

Integrity
Integrity is vital in our business. Without it we lose the trust and respect of our customers. This means talking to you in plain English and giving you all the facts and information you need to know in order to make an informed decision. It also means standing by our word and delivering exactly what we promise.

Performance
Going the extra mile has been the foundation of our success. We regularly mystery shop all our branches, in addition to carrying out call monitoring and regularly reviewing customer feedback,to ensure that all our customers are receiving the best possible service.

If this sounds like the type of independent agent you'd like to sell or let your property, why not contact your local branch for more information on how the Spirit of Andrews can shed a fresh light on the way you look at estate and letting agents.

Or, if you think you can make a difference in an organisation that rewards hard work; where the customers needs always come first; and you go the extra mile in all that you do, then joining Andrews could be just the opportunity you've been looking for.

Habitat for Humanity ~ Building not just houses but also hope

Every morning, one third of the world's population – that's 2 billion people – wake up in appalling poverty. As a result, their health is poor, they struggle to earn a living, buy food or medicine and often cannot afford to send their children to school.

Poverty housing is the 'mark' of poverty and it keeps people poor, dependent and vulnerable, for generation after generation.

Habitat for Humanity believes that enabling everyone to have a safe, decent place to live is catalytic in breaking the cycle of poverty. Everyone has a right to clean water, an education or healthcare, and we believe that they also have a right to a decent place to live. We champion that right, and to make poverty housing a matter for conscience and action.

But we do more than champion rights: We take practical action. We partner with communities in housing need to find appropriate, permanent, long-term solutions to their particular housing issues.

We do this in such a way as to build the capacity and capabilities of each community, so that they are active participants in the solution to their housing problems and not passive recipients of aid. They emerge from the process not just with homes, but with the skills and assets to be able to make further positive community-focused changes in their neighbourhood.

Across communities in over 90 countries including Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Habitat for Humanity has assisted more than 2 million people to renovate, repair or build over 400,000 homes since we were formed in 1976. We invite you to join with us, to be part of the solution to poverty housing.

We're building more than houses: we're building hope.

SHOPJACKET ~ Helping the High Street

Shopjacket was formed by property consultant Paul Murphy and interior designer Neil Wilson.

The business was created after Paul perceived a need to create a visual focus to reinforce the consultancy work he was giving to local councils to promote and encourage new businesses to open.

What Shopjacket costs
Shopjacket represents fantastic value for money. Each Shopjacket is a bespoke item, with different amounts of work required, and we price each one accordingly. We would just require a photo of the premises, and dimensions so that we could give you a price.

What people are saying:

This is a simple and cost effective approach that keeps the retail unit available for potential new uses and in the meantime also contributes to the street scene. Judith Wallace, Deputy Mayor, North Tyneside

This makes a great difference to our High Street - it looks tidy and professional. Karen Goldfinch, Chair of Whitley bay Chamber of Trade, in the Daily Mail.

The space has been transformed in 24 hours and hopefully it will plant ideas in peoples' heads and act as a symbol of regeneration for the street.
Robert Ryan, Chairman of Business for Dumbarton, in the Lennox Herald.

http://www.shopjacket.co.uk/

It was very interesting talking with one of the management of a Chamber of Commerce who told me about the ShoJacket business initiative. It is certainly a very creative and impacting way of re-designing empty shop windows to both enrich the environemnt of the town or city and also inspire new clients. Editor

Thomas Williams ~ a voice for the voiceless

In 1997 as a young man I visited the city of Vukovar in Croatia. The scene of ethnic cleansing during the Balkan conflict, it was dubbed the 'Croatian Stalingrad' because of the extent of the devastation. It was there, and whilst visiting the affected refugees and IDPs (internally displaced people,) that I became aware of the power of photography to tell the stories of people without voice, and the responsibility upon me to echo their call for help.

Studying BA Photography at Nottingham Trent University, and on an Erasmus exchange to the University of Lapland, I had the opportunity to explore the discipline of large-format landscape photography. A world away from documentary work, I enjoyed the 'near objectivity' this medium brings, as whilst all photography is inherently subjective, it is the closest one can come to removing the photographer's input and faithfully representing the whole scene.

Since leaving University I joined Global Hand, a humanitarian aid network that seeks to match needs and resource. A member of a small team my role has expanded beyond communications, and as my understanding of this area has deepened, so has my original conviction that I have a responsibility to be a voice for the voiceless.

As a networking organisation Global Hand represents many charitable organisations working in challenging situations around the globe. This has given me the opportunity to visit some fantastic projects, and my hope as I continue to do so is to faithfully represent the voices of the marginalised people they are serving.

That goes across what everyone does whether it's strategy, design, technology or hosting. We're always seeking ways to do something great, something amazing, something that's really going to make a difference to you and your supporters.

The digital revolution presents both opportunities and challenges to charities. We want to help you embrace digital: to successfully engage with supporters; increase donations and raise income. We can help you determine what, when and how to invest in digital.

What's most often quoted as having been the single biggest factor when a charity chooses to work with us?
- Our Team. A trustworthy, fun and extremely talented group of people that make even the most challenging agile project enjoyable.

Industry and Parliament Trust ~ Linking Industry and Parliament through mutual understanding

Established in 1977, the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) is a registered charity dedicated to promoting mutual understanding between Parliament and the worlds of business, industry and commerce for the public benefit. This is achieved by encouraging dialogue between legislators and wealth generators from all sectors of business. The IPT is independent, non-partisan and non-lobbying.

Specifically the IPT provides programmes of study, research, education and training in the organisation and practice of industry and commerce, and also of the administration of Government both within the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Listening to Sally Muggeridge, Chief Executive of IPT speak at an evening function in London was very informative and inspiring. Her vivacious, realistic and relentless vision to see a true depth of mutual understaning between Parliamentarians and Business Executives is very motivating. Seeking to understand all the issues involved is truly a worthy goal.

Jurys Inns ~ Inn the heart of it all

"Our hotels are in key cities throughout the UK & Ireland, including four London hotels and three hotels in Dublin city centre. Ideally located for sight seeing, shopping and business, all our hotels have spacious comfortable bedrooms to relax in. Meet with friends or colleagues in our contemporary bar and restaurant areas. Relax and enjoy your stay with us."

My experience of this chain of hotels has not been actually sampling their accommodation but having seen at first hand something of their customer-care and thoughtfulness to visitors just seeking a warm place to wait for a coach in rather inclement weather. This encoutner with their counter-staff and coffee house personnel has spoken volumes to me. I would certainly like to see the wider experience of actually staying in one of the Inns. Will let you know more when I've done so. [Editor]

Boston Tea Party ~ Award winning West Country cafe chain

Established in 1996 we are a family owned award-winning small West Country café chain who pride ourselves on serving outstanding coffee & tea as well as creating delicious, feel good & affordable meals. Our ethics are incredibly important to us & to the running of our cafés. We aim to source ethically sound products from local suppliers & we use only free range meat & eggs in our meals. All our milk is 100% organic & we offer either fairly traded or 'relationship' coffee. We are of course very family friendly.

We aim to be the antithesis of the homogenised high street dining experience & we operate today on the same principles that were established when Boston Tea Party first opened its doors - to operate fairly, to offer high quality local products at affordable prices & to employ an informed, intelligent & committed workforce.

Boston Tea Party cafés have become more than just places to grab a coffee & a slice of cake. They have grown into social hubs where many specialist groups & enthusiasts meet, from charities, to commerce, to church groups. We encourage people to use our notice boards as a means to promote their businesses, to advertise upcoming local events & to use the café to exhibit or perform their art. We continually strive to support a range of charities, from local community projects to international appeals, by raising funds, allowing our premises to be used & by participating in events.

Last week I had the privilege to check out the Boston Tea Party cafe in Salisbury, UK. It was excellent and lives up to the chain's reputation for sure. The historic building which they have chosen dates back to 1300's. A wonderful location to have a coffee or snack with friends or the whole family. Full of intriguing nooks and crannies..... Editor

Just Giving ~ facilitating web-charity giving.

When in London last year, I visited the HQ of the excellent internet fundraising group called "Just Giving" (JG). Over a mug of tea two of the staff expalined about Just Giving and I was able to share my link with Global Hand and my interest in seeing funds generated for quality sustainable projects overseas. Having seen most of these projects at first hand or knowing their founders well, I have much confidence in recommending others to become involved.

As a direct result of the visit, I set up a page on the Just Giving site for a special agricultural project in Malawi. Am interested to see how this develops over the coming months. At the moment interest in slow. The JG concept is very good and the back-up service they give is excellent but I sense one needs to do a fair amount of marketing one's self through personal relationships and contacts.

Some friends have used the services of JG and to good effect, one generating some £600 for the Red Cross and the other encouraging folk to give to Starfish Asia also exceeding £600. So the system works. As a result of all the sponsored individuals and groups in the 2010 London Marathon some £18 million pounds were donated to charities. Quite a mega achievement.

A quote from the Just Giving website:

We exist to help you raise more money than you ever thought possible for the causes you care about.

When we created the company in 1999, our dream was to enable any charity, however small, to use the web to raise money at very low cost. Almost no one believed it could be done. Nearly ten years later, we are proud to have become the leading online platform for charity giving, helping over 8,000 member charities raise more than £450 million.

Steppes Travel ~ Travel beyond the ordinary

In the spring of 1989, sitting on a rough bench in the foothills of the Altai mountains in southern Russia, listening to folk songs playing on a guitar, I sat looking at some of the most beautiful mountain scenery I had seen anywhere in the world, hundreds of miles from civilisation. It was at that moment I realised that there were people out there, like me, who would also like to visit these remote areas of the world.

People who had neither the time, nor knowledge, to organise it themselves. People who appreciated their comforts, but who would nevertheless forsake all, to visit some remote hut in the mountains without a decent bathroom because it was worth it, because it was an adventure. People who shunned group travel and who wanted to explore the world and return home enriched and with a feeling of having escaped their norm, if only for a while.

And so Steppes was born and has flourished, taking our clients to the more exotic regions of the world, showing them the main sites and then taking them off the beaten track to lesser known but equally interesting places not overrun with tourists. Additionally though, we have widened our appeal and, as you will see below, we also sell more luxurious forms of holiday such as river cruises and beach resorts.

A highly knowledgeable team of experts
We now have 38 people in the office, many of whom have been with the company over 10 years, giving us what, we believe, is the most knowledgeable team of specialist travel experts in the UK. Furthermore, they travel every year to the region they specialise in, which ensures they are fully up to date with new hotels, lodges and ideas. Within the travel industry several of our staff are recognised as the defining experts in their field.

An enviable level of repeat and referral business
3,000 people travel with us each year, of whom two thirds are either repeat clients or friends of clients. I believe this indicates that we are getting it right for them and I hope we can do the same for you.

The Kings Head ~ Friendly restaurant and service

The site of this Wetherspoon pub has been occupied by an inn since the 15th century. By c1520, it was known as the King's Head, and it retained that name until it was rebuilt in the 1880s. The County Hotel was, itself, a change of name some time during the 1880s or 1890s. Before then, it was the Kings Head and Brewery. The King's Head was an inn with a long pedigree. In 1623, John Taylor, the 'Water Poet', demonstrated that the Avon could be made navigable by rowing his boat from London. On reaching Fisherton Bridge, he lodged at the King's Head Inn. The Kings Head is recorded as having been at Fisherton Anchor since 1526.

On a recent visit for a snack, I discovered the service and meal to be very good. My talk with the manager was encouraging too. There is an atmosphere of good team work.

ECONE ~ Designer Jewellery

From the beginning...

The EC One story starts in 1997. England was in a new era of politics, music and fashion and our bit of London – the postcode of EC1 – was a great place to be. We opened our first store, complete with open plan workshop, on Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell; within weeks the street was bustling with bespoke tailors, delicatessens, quirky bars and restaurants.

The shop was a success and after two years we decided to open a second store, this time in Notting Hill, west London. The Notting Hill branch is a gorgeous, welcoming shop on Ledbury Road, where we hold regular events celebrating our designers, to which all our customer's are welcome.

Here at EC One we aim to set ourselves apart from the mainstream jewellery shops found on every high street, in every town. Our position as an independent jewellery shop has won us 'Best for Fashion' at the UK Jewellery Awards two years running – a great achievement which has put EC One firmly on the map within the UK jewellery and fashion industries.

We source new designers and new collections at the annual London, Paris and New York jewellery shows, striving to bring our customers the future seasons' trends, always on the lookout for that something special. Over the years, EC One has discovered great jewellery talents, from Stephen Webster and Niessing to Alex Monroe and Alexis Bittar.

Our Clerkenwell workshop allows us to make bespoke pieces, or re-model customers' jewellery to suit their wishes, while the development of our online store means that shopping at EC One is easier than ever for those jewellery lovers outside of London. With a gift-wrapping service and worldwide postage, a little bit of EC One can be yours, wherever you are.
